Good to know
- The cobblestones ('chiancarelle') in Matera are extremely polished and slippery even when dry. Never wear smooth-soled shoes.
- Book your cave dinner and the Crypt of Original Sin at least 2 weeks in advance; they have very limited capacity.
- Download the 'Matera Welcome' app for local maps that work better in the narrow alleys than standard GPS.
- Matera bread (Pane di Matera) is protected by IGP status. Buy a loaf at Panificio Paoluccio; it stays fresh for almost a week!
