Plan Your Perfect Road Trip
A road trip planner that thinks in driving hours, not pins on a map. Tell us your start, end and days — Tripply splits the route into sane daily legs with stops worth pulling over for.
Road trips fail on arithmetic. A route that looks like six hours of driving becomes nine once you add fuel stops, photo stops, lunch and the last hour of mountain switchbacks — and you arrive after dark with nothing open.
Tripply's road trip planner caps each day at a drivable distance, places overnight stops in towns that actually have somewhere to sleep and eat, and fills the gaps between them with viewpoints, trailheads and roadside stops that are genuinely on the way.
How to size your daily driving
Four to five hours behind the wheel is the sweet spot for a sightseeing road trip. Beyond six hours the day becomes transport, not travel — you stop pulling over, and the stops you do make feel rushed.
Scenic coastal or mountain roads — 150–250 km/day
Averages drop to 50–60 km/h with switchbacks, single lanes and constant photo stops.
Rural highways — 300–450 km/day
Comfortable with two proper stops and an early-afternoon arrival.
Interstate or motorway transit — 500–700 km/day
Only worth it for a repositioning day. Don't schedule two in a row.
Routes people plan most
Iceland Ring Road — 8–12 days · 1,330 km
Counter-clockwise from Reykjavik. Add the Westfjords only with 12+ days and a summer date.
Pacific Coast Highway — 7–10 days · SF → San Diego
Drive southbound so you're on the ocean side. Big Sur closures are common — check before committing.
Scotland NC500 — 6–8 days · 830 km
Single-track roads with passing places. Book accommodation early; supply is genuinely tight.
Garden Route — 6–9 days · Cape Town → Port Elizabeth
Easy driving, wildlife detours inland, and the only route here where you can swim, hike and safari in one week.
Before you turn the key
One-way fees
Dropping the car in a different city can cost more than the rental. Loop routes are often cheaper than point-to-point.
Fuel gaps
Iceland's east, Australia's outback and the US Southwest have 150 km+ gaps between stations. Fill at half a tank.
Season and daylight
Mountain passes close in winter and short daylight halves what you can see. Tripply factors seasonal daylight into each day's plan.
Offline maps
Download the route before you leave coverage. Your day plan and map stay readable on the phone.
road trip planner: frequently asked questions
How many hours should I drive per day on a road trip?
Four to five hours is comfortable for a trip where you want to stop and look at things. Six or more turns the day into transport and you'll skip the stops you planned it for.
Does the planner include stops along the route?
Yes — each driving day gets viewpoints, towns, trailheads and places to eat that sit on or near your route, with a map showing the sequence and distances between them.
Can I plan a one-way road trip?
Yes. Give a different start and end point and Tripply builds a linear route. Check one-way rental drop-off fees before booking — they can be substantial.
Does it work for international road trips?
It plans anywhere. Cross-border rentals need permission from the rental company, and some countries require an International Driving Permit — verify both before you go.
